Music

Whole-class music lessons are taught throughout the school by the Head of Music in the Music Room. The EYFS and National Curriculum form the basis of Sarum Hall's music curriculum but this is widely enhanced to enable the girls to experience a wide range of music.

From the age of six girls are able to opt for instrumental lessons; currently on offer are piano, violin, cello, woodwind and singing. Five peripatetic music teachers attend the school to teach individual lessons and who also teach the music ensembles and the orchestra. Individual instrumental lessons take place in the purpose-built music teaching and rehearsal rooms. Girls taking instrumental lessons are taken out of their school classes on a rotational basis.

Two music assemblies each week are organised by the Head of Music. Music appreciation on Tuesday often reflects the theme of the week. Performance assembly is for any girl, of any standard, wishing to perform including girls who learn their instruments out of school.

Music groups

The junior and senior choir meet as a voluntary after school club. There are two chamber ensembles who meet on Monday mornings before school, at 8am. Ensembles vary according to the instruments being learnt but usually include string, cello and wind groups. Junior string group, for violin and cello beginners, meets in first break each Friday. The woodwind teacher takes a recorder group each Tuesday morning and a flute group on Thursday mornings. Optional theory classes occur during lunch breaks, for girls working towards Grades 1 to 5.

Associated Board instrumental and theory exams are taken each term and the consistently high standards achieved by the girls reflect the high quality of teaching. Sarum Hall girls have also gained music scholarships for their respective senior schools.

I do percussion group. It is really fun! I play the handchimes. It is a small group and we enjoy every second.

The teachers are very good at explaining things and if you are stuck, the teacher will take as much time as you need to explain.
