EYFS

Learning at Sarum Hall School is engaging, exciting, and enjoyable. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) we encourage children to be happy, independent and motivated members of the school community. Our EYFS consists of Nursery and Reception. Each year group has two Form Teachers and a teaching and learning assistant.

The EYFS curriculum covers seven areas of a child’s development, three Prime Areas that are key to allow children to develop and learn and four Specific Areas that support these:

Prime Areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Art and Design

A combination of planned activities together with structured and exploratory play stimulates and extends the natural interests of our pupils. Alongside classroom activities lead by the Form Teacher, specialist teachers teach music and PE and other specialists support in delivering the curriculum. The classrooms have a range of resources and devices accessible to the girls to support their learning of ICT skills and the world around them.

The Early Years girls are an important part of the school community and are included in many of the whole school activities, such as trips, visits, charity projects and workshops, as well as enjoying opportunities designed specifically for them. At Christmas and the end of the summer term, the EYFS put on hugely enjoyable dramatic performances for their parents and carers.

KS1

KS1

Key Stage 1 consists of year groups Year 1 and Year 2. Each class has a form tutor who is responsible for the pupils’ pastoral care and a Teaching and Learning Assistant to support them.

Form Teachers teach their forms the majority of academic subjects: English, maths, history, geography and RE.  Pupils are taught by subject specialist teachers for PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic), physical education (PE), computing, art & design, science, and music.

Key Stage 1 builds on the learning experiences in the Early Years Foundation Stage. The curriculum is broad and balanced, going beyond the national curriculum and pupils learn skills, as well as knowledge. At Christmas, both Year 1 and 2 girls perform in a production.

KS2

KS2

Key Stage 2 consists of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Subject specialist teaching increases as our pupils progress through the school. Physical education (PE), science, art & design, music, computing and Spanish are taught by subject specialists.  In Years 5 and 6, our pupils are taught by a specialist English, maths and humanities teachers.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills are developed from Years 4 to 6. Learning Skills are incorporated into the curriculum as part of their preparation for senior school life. The curriculum remains broad and balanced, and preparation for the 11+ exams in Year 6 begins in Year 5.

After the pupils in Year 6 have obtained their 11+ results in the Spring Term, they practise and perform in a dramatic production through which they further develop acting, singing and dancing skills.

Pupils in Years 4 to 6 go on residential trips which, as well as being great fun, encourage independence and teamwork skills.

“Why did we choose Sarum Hall? Its reputation and our observations on the school’s value system and pastoral care, and how they raise the girls in addition to educating them. Also their commitment to music, the arts and extra-curricular activities.”
