History
History is taught throughout the school either in topic areas or as a discrete subject. During the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Year 1 History is covered through cross-curricular topics by the class teacher. In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 the National Curriculum topics are taught with extension activities.
Pupils learn about significant people, places and events from the recent and more distant past, both from Britain and the wider world. Different sources of information are used to help investigate the past and pupils learn that events can be represented and interpreted in different ways.
In Years 2 and 3 History is taught as a separate subject by the class teachers. In Years 4 to 6 History lessons are taught by the specialist humanities teacher in the Humanities Room. Classes generally have two lessons per week.
At all levels of the school cross-curricular links are made through music, art and dance and trips are organised to support and enhance the children’s learning.
The History curriculum is regularly reviewed with the History co-ordinator and the purchasing of new textbooks and up-to-date resources reflect this.
